I am trying to repair a 1974 Foremost men's 3-speed bike. Its in great shape, but it needs a new shifter cable for the Sturmey-Archer hub. I have had this thing since May last year and I waited MONTHS for a new cable and stopper from the bike shop. Fall came and I got sick of waiting and pushed the bike into the yard for the nest year. Now I get a new cable but it needs STEEL crimps on the end for it to function in the shifter. I tried a brass one with no luck and I tried buying some kind of fitting from the hardware store today and I had keep crushing it until it was small enough and then smash it with my hammer for it to crimp the cable.

Needless to say that destroyed the cable and I have maybe on more shot at this. This bike has taken up too much time and I just it finished and gone. Where can I find the STEEL crimps or perhaps how can I rig this thing to work?

I'm going to take a Tylenol now for my headache, hopefully you guys can help!

The correct cables come with the end crimped/soldered? on. Do you just need the inner cable or the outside sheath as well? What length? I can probably help you out and save your sanity.

I just need the inner cable (again). The ends have steel crimps on the ends to maintain tension without slipping. The steel crimps are no longer made. I tried aluminum and brass and they both slipped under the tension of the cable. I tried to jury rig it with something from the hardware store and I ended up destroying my new cable entirely.

I'll measure the cable and send you a PM. Thank you!

Yea, ebay has those sturmey archer cable/housing/adjust nut/screw shaft
kits for like $5.
