My dad told me stories of he and his friends oiling the primer finishes on their cars, back in the day. Fast forward 40 something years, I completed a Schwinn Continental conversion with rattle can primer and rubbed 3 in 1 oil on it to make it shine.

My question is this: Are there better types of oils that will last longer? Can one apply decals to such a finish?

Thanks

Flip

decals like clean surfaces and oil is not. I have used gun oil and wd-40 to coat bare metal frames.

In the 60's we use to wash our cars with 3 gallons of water mixed with a 1/2 gallon of kerosene. made them real shinny because it oiled the paint. Got dusty real quick though.

Why not skip the oil, shoot the black primer, apply decals, then shoot a semi gloss clear? Not too dull, or too shiney. That ought to give you the look your after. Try a couple of different variants on white cardboard (primer and gloss, primer and semi, primer and dullcoat) until you get exactly what you want.
Hope that helps,
Rick
