A couple of frames followed me home today. I know the red one is a Cleveland Welding frame.......not really sure what the other is. I really like the frame style but I'd be guessing to tell what it is. Has a 4 digit serial # on the bottom of the crank bracket. 5582 and it looks hand stamped.

I am guessing a JC Higgins. Karfer67 will be able to tell you for sure, he might even try to buy it.

The black and grey frame is a postwar Manton and Smith frame. M&S was one of the smallest independent American balloon manufacturers and were in business producing bicycles from about 1935 through the mid fifties. Their most notable features were their patented integral head tube lock (which this frame doesn't have) and their hand welded construction. I've tossed in this link to the CABE where there was some discussion about a similar frame that turned up a while ago.

The red frame is a Cleveland welding frame from about 1947-1949, If you post or PM me a serial number (including the Cw suffix if it has one) I can pin it down a bit further.

I did notice the beautiful welds on the frame. They made no attempt to cover them up. Even the drop outs are welded in, which led me to believe it may have been built by someone as a one off. Thats pretty cool thats it's a M&S. I'll take a look at the serial # on the CWC when I get home. Thanks!
