a budy of mine works at a local foundary. they make giant turbines, parts of jet engines etc etc. with the large castings they work with, theres a large amount of waste metal poured each time they do a casting.
a couple months back we got to talking about casting cool stuff with the surplus. basicly my budy is making a second mold in the bottom of the molds.
the molten metals need channels to pour off/prevent air getting trapped etc etc. so he's using that to our advantage to fill our molds.

with all the halloween stuff in the stores, he picked up a couple foam/plastic skulls. (i'd asked about pouring alum. skulls for some of my bike projects.)
anyhoo, the other day he showed up with this. it needs to be cleaned, but its going on the front of my burrito.
was a total surprize and i'm stoked. it opens up a world of possiblities as for as custom bikes go.

anybody else casting metals? (be it work or hobby)

Gotavan Dan and his family do castings. He's got some pretty cool tuff. He does a lot for the old vans and takes them to swap meets and such. He also occassionaly sells his stuff on ebay, but I can't remember what he sells under. Give him a shout and he'll get back with ya.

I do some castings in my Dads garage, my kids do some of the work, pouring aluminum started doing this stuff in 1984. Mostly do pedal tractor parts, and steam engine parts.
