this little number showed up at my door yesterday. although it had a couple serious ailments, i gave the guy the $40 he wanted for the bike.
IMG_4539.jpg

forks are bent, chunks outta the frame, cranks been butchered and it needed bearings, chain, tubes etc.
now i've decided to call it destiny for a couple reasons (which i'll get into as we go) however this puppy has fought me every step of the way.

figured i'd throw new rubber on it, a cheap walmart seat, give it a tune up and call it a done deal. i wish things where that easy. lol
it all started with the neck. after 4 hours of trying to remove it from the bent forks i ended up cutting the fork tube just below the bottom bearing (forks where loose and i had a couple inches of play. ) from there i used my angle grinder and a sanding disk to split the remainding piece of fork tube still on the neck.(end to end) managed to remove it without any trace of damage to the neck.

i have 1 extra set of forks in the house, an old 50's ccm fork that had been repainted blue years ago. heres where the destiny came in, not only was the fork a perfect fit for the bike (bearings, tube length everything) but there a very similar color blue. they did cause some problems with the fender (fender strut was too short) but i managed to find an old ccm balloon tire fender with the perfect length struts (might have even been from this fork)

mounted a couple kenda tires on the rims. the rear fender wouldn't fit around the 3"x24 so i cut it.
and the front wheel looks too small with the fender.

i have 3 options.
1 add a 3"x24 to the front, but i would probably have to cut the front fender.
2 i could remove the fender all together
3. add a 26" wheel to the front.

i think i'm gonna go with option 3. it just so happens (another reason for the destiny name) i have a 26" rim that matches the front 24 on the bike (2 different rims on the bike, a newer shimano rim on the rear)
this is the newer rim on the back
IMG_4569.jpg

(front rim) not only does the 24" rim have an identical profile to the 1950's ccm 26" rim in my basement, but the silver spray paint on the rim almost matches the hammer tone silver i used to paint my 26" months ago.

i'll relace the rear hub on the front rim (using the black spokes/green nipples) and add the 26" matching rim to the front.
so here it is with the 24 on the front
IMG_4562.jpg

and heres the 26 in front (probably use a smaller tire)
IMG_4574.jpg

i bought a cheap bell cruiser seat, but i gotta be honest. i hate it on this bike. even though brown is a neutral color it seems to clash and i dont plan on painting this bike for a while (got lots of other things i have to get to first)
it needs an old pan seat and laid back seat post.

i'm really digging this bike, but i cant get over how compact this thing is. (even with the new forks moving the front axle forward 1.5".

the crank is in rough shape, so i'm gonna replace it completely.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

oh yeah, 26 for sure, the fender is just too cool to loose imo.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

Aww man, looks like we both had "fun" with builds this weekend  Somehow, i've no doubt you'll make it work Leigh.
Here's an idea, use an old fork stem as a seat post, that will kick the seat back a few inches, and drop the brown seat off at the local shoemakers and have them re-dye it black

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

the fork stem now looks like a taco. (literally peeled it off the neck) but i do need a laid back post.) i have a sweet pan seat i picked up from guelph, it just needs alittle love.

so were ya playing with mustang? or did ya get another?

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

Naw man, had I been smart, I would have worked on the 'stang. Instead I had the bright idea to tackle this;

Think i'll put the stang together, and leave red on the back burner for now.... unless maybe I get that cup out with a pipe wrench :p

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

well it looks like i',m gonna loose the fender and go back to the 24"

this bike is compact! i got big feet, and ya know what they say about guys with big feet.
you got it! they wear big shoe's.

i took her for a test ride and that fender gets in the way. i keep kicking it. its gotta go.
i mean i really dig it and would love to keep it. however, if my toes hang 1.5" over the front of the pedal, i'm kicking the fender.

i'm only 5'10 but i gotta make some room. so i'm gonna go back to the 24". :) i might cut the fender, but perhaps i'll leave it for another build.

i would have love to put boardtrack style bars on this build, but again, i'm not sure its the best suited frame for it.
IMG_4578_2.jpg

it would make turning real tough. i'm hoping a laid back seat post will give me enough room to follow through.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

roll with the bunches right?

well i think i figured it all out.

cut down a set of board track style bars and a laid back seat post will def help.
IMG_4582_3.jpg

now this pic is alittle extreme, but heres what i'm thinking
IMG_4578_3.jpg

i don't want the forks to look like this, but its the only way i could get the pic/stare at my vision to see if i liked it.

i plan on putting 4 or 5 relief cuts in the back of the forks (the ones on the bike/not the ones i cut off) i'll slowly bend them forward (welding in the gaps on the back) same principal as bending wood with relief cuts.

i dont know if i'll need the old forks, but i might end up using portions of them to extend these.

Duuuuuude...that last picture is it!!!!!!!!!!!

its def the right dirrection!
went to my budy craig's (he's got a nice miller tig )
filled in the holes in the frame, knocked off the seat post, started on the forks but we ran outta time (it's craig's b-day)
i figure a couple more releif cuts in the forks and it should be golden. :)
IMG_4596.jpg

alittle more work than expected with this build, but well worth it in the end.
IMG_4587.jpg

i'm even content with the brown seat now i have brown grips.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

I like that look. Definately a unique build. Good Idea getting that front wheel out further on that compact frame.

thx bud. as cool as the compact frame is, there was def something wrong with the build. it just didn't look right.
i thought it was the different sized rims that were buggin me, but i think it really all came down to the wheels being too close to one another.

it just didn't sit right with me.
if i hadden't kicked the fender a couple times, i would probably still be trying to figure it out.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

when i bought my home, i found a unused brass kick plate in my basement. it's been hanging around for a couple years now.
i thought i might eventually replace the one on my front door with it, but i came up with a much better use.
unfortunatly the brass had a protective clear coat on it.(beneath the protective wrap) when i cut the brass, it burned off a couple of the flame tips.
IMG_4612.jpg

now if i can just duplicate it for the other side, i'll be golden.
at the start of this build i hated the brown seat on the bike, would never have guess i'd be adding more brown to the mix and love'n it.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

That wooden plate with the brass flames is right on!! :) And in my opinion brown and blue looks good together.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

a super fun little bike. it turned a few heads on it's maiden voyage.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

Dude, sweet flames! i'm sooo gonna rip you off for that idea   Just take them off, lay them back on the sheet brass, and trace them out with a scriber. What did you use to cut them out?
Rick

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

i used a speed bore (1" and a 1/2")drill bit (spade) to make the inside radius of the flames, then hit it with a sanding disk and my angle gringer to do alot of the outter profile.(holding it flat to a piece of wood) from there i switched to the dremel. first a large heavy duty cutting disk, to open everything up. carbide bur (cylinder) made short work of shaping the flames and a small sanding drum to clean it up.

hth

traced out the flames for the second one before i attached it. :)
the wood is 1/4 ply good 2 sides (veneered) its such i tight fit, it holds itself inplace. still gotta figure out how i'm gonna secure it.

Re: gonna call it destiny(thought this would be quick and easy)

I used an old leather belt (red to match my paint) to secure my tank on my 'tracker, other guys have used plumbers strapping in copper or plain galvanized. Pretty sure i've also seen velcro and even a screw into the frame.Another member used a post clamp from a chain link fence. Heck if friction held it in place for the test ride, paint the bike, then put the tank in and shoot it all with clear at once!
