Looks like the rims will polish up a bit. It’s taking forever so I moved into the house where it’s warmer and I can watch videos while I polish.

A good long while later the wheel is actually looking pretty good. I’m not sure it’s worth the effort but the results are good.
No time to get into polishing the rear wheel today so I put a coat of wax on the frame to see what it would look like. It gave it a nice bit of gloss , more than I expected. Next up, order some parts.

2 hrs into the rear wheel. Filed and sanded some bad spots, sanded the brake surfaces, polished, tensioned and trued (ish). But I’ve still got $0 into this wheel. It’s better than the wheels that came on the bike with the Shimano 600 hub, good quality double wall rim and stainless spokes. The front wheel has a similar double wall rim but galvanized spokes and Normandy hub. Still a decent wheelset for this price point. Now to true the front wheel and install the tubes and tires.

Unable to do tires due to a faulty pump. I’ll have to find my other one tomorrow. This seatpost is more gouged up than any I’ve seen before.
I hit it with a file, 60 & 220 grit sandpaper and a little aluminum polish. That’s as good as it’s going to get. I wonder if it was the right size post, these French bikes use odd sized tubing. It fits well enough and with some grease should be good for another 40 years.
I polished the stem a little too. Not perfect, just a bit of a clean up. I want this bike to keep its lived-in feel.

Got the new Schwalbe tires on. These were on sale for I think $12 each. Perfect. They look great on there too.
Seatpost and stem installed with plenty of grease.
This saddle doesn’t fit the seatpost. It’s on there for now but I’m going to have to swap out the seatpost.
Looking good with seat and bars. These Wald bars are a bit heavy but should be comfortable.

I got some nice Tectro brake levers
I need to figure out a way to trim holes in the ends of the grips that looks decent since I’m using bar end shifters

I wasn’t sure if the cranks had French threading but these MKS pedals threaded right in by hand so good to go.

Yes! I’m a big fan of cruiser bars in old 10 speeds. I call them gentleman’s bikes.

I actually do have a nice vintage bell for it, just need to dig it out.

Those 600 cranks and MKS pedals sure are pretty together. This will be such a great rider
They do look great together. I actually bought the pedals previously, on sale, for a klunker project and then decided they were too nice for a klunker. I hope the 38/34 low gear will be low enough for the hills. It's as low as I can get with these cranks and a freewheel rear. I really want to keep these cranks too, very nice stuff.
If you're using those shifters and grips your going to run into routing problems there designed to use bar wraps to hold the cable would also clean up your cockpit you. You can also run the brake cables in. Just my two sense.

That's a good point. I do have some bar tape, I might just do that.
I fear those grips are going to clutter up an otherwise very clean bike. Use 2 sided tape to pin down the cable and wrap around. How strong are your hands

Cut the leather wet it then just like tieing a show.use drill to make the holes if you don't have a punch. Trick is just keep the leather wet and cut it slightly less than the bar.

You think the wood grain cork grips are too gaudy? You might be right about that. The leather would look amazing. I thought about leather grip tape and I may do that, I have some I could poach off of another bike. But I want to use cloth tape on the bars forward of the brake levers similar to these
And I like that combined with cork grips. VO only had these wood grained ones when I ordered, I may save them for another project. There are other cool ways to do it using different kinds of bar tape.
