Grant Petersonof Bridgestone fame and owner of Rivendell Bicycles came through town last night to promote his new book, Just Ride. He spoke at the Boise Bicycle Project a little about the book and some about his life. He is all about steel bikes, leather saddles and comfortable riding positions. His views come across as negative against bike racing, but his main point is that people just need to get out and ride. Don't make it so complicated.

After the presentation, we went for a ride to a local brewpub and enjoyed some great conversation. I did get my book signed but I have not read it yet.

that's really cool you got to meet him. I've been a fan of him since I purchased my RB-1 in '89. I'll probably be purchasing a Riv in the next few years.

I would like to have a Rivendell but can't justify the purchase price.

i was fortunate to have an ex-coworker who was a stocking riv dealer back when wholesale on an atlantis frameset was @700...

thanks again, tim! :D

Cman,

Thanks for the tip on a great book!

I just started to read it, I like what he has to say.

"JUST RIDE!" :D

Lots of people don't like him for his ideas about 650B tires, comfort, etc. but I agree with him 99% of the time. I show up to group "Lance-wannabe" rides on my steel touring bike (with racks, fenders, and dynohub, thankyouverymuch) and I'm just amazed at how much money these people put into their weekend hobby. Meanwhile, I'm riding as much as I can, everywhere I can, and having a blast.

Just ride, man.

Having been aware of Grant's approach to cycling for years, I wasn't going to get the book, thinking I wouldn't be surprised by anything he'd have to say... but I broke down and bought it.

At the very least it's an easy reading, interesting book. As always since I became aware of him, I agree with some of this thoughts, but not all. He doesn't seem to take into account the multi-personality types like me, who get off on 16 pound carbon fiber bikes as much as salvaging a gas pipe 70s Huffy, and find the time to ride a huge collection of bikes, in jeans, cargo shorts, or fully kitted up in lycra and a "six ounce helmet". I do many of the things he suggests not to get in the habit of, and I also practice much of the sensible advice he gives.

anyway, I'm glad I bought the book and will probably share it with some friends.

The book presents a lot of bike riding ideas in a conversational tone. Worth a read.
