I'm no Hawthorne expert, but as a general rule I won't pay $100 for a bike unless it's no later than the early 60's, with all the original parts, and with the expected wear but missing any severe problem like major rust. Anything older or with an original feature might help me deal with the problem, what ever it might be.
In the end, it's your money. If you feel good about it, pull the trigger. If your friend is truly a friend, he won't sell it to anyone else or keep it himself if he knows you're very interested.
