Hawthorne Pre-War??

Picked this up at the Pomona Swap Meet a few weekends ago for $60. The front fork appears to be bent slightly, but the price is not bad for a complete original bike, less the skiptooth components. Looks like it's been covered with house paint. Plan is to get the fork straightened and put the skiptooth components back on the bike. Always wanted a bike with curved fender braces.

Can someone please provide me with the approximate year of manufacture? Also, was there a tank available for this bike?

Also picked up this chainguard at Pomona. What bike is it from?

Thinking about putting it on the Hawthorne, but it'll require some modification.

Lastly, picked up this 1954 license plate and peel and stick stickers at the Good Guys West Coast Nationals last weekend. The plan is to put a sticker on the bottoms of rear fenders.

Definitely a CWC built, 1938-47. They changed the headbadge style in 48. The sprocket is mid 50s, would have had skiptooth originally. And yes, the did come with tanks! Good find! :mrgreen: ~Adam

Your bike was made by Cleveland Welding for Montgomery Ward. It is a postwar frame and the dropout style dates the bike to 1947-1949. With the additional information on the badge, it appears the bike is probably from 1947 production.

The black chain guard is a generic item that was used on many girl’s bikes from the teens through the mid thirties.

The yellow boy’s bike pictured in this thread is a Monark built bike from about 1938-39

Once again, Phil hits the nail on the head! I've also noticed that prewar Hawthornes have the badge holes on the sides, whereas yours is vertical. So, the 46-7 bikes that are hard to see in the Hawthorne book must have the vertical badge, unless there were prewar leftovers! But, the 48-49's have an aluminum badge that has Hawthorne across the top, and 50-late 50s have the blue & red M/W "crest" badge. If I remember Phil's history correctly, the postwar drops are different as they don't have drop stand 'ears'. ~Adam
