threw this together this past weekend. it is a zep frame nice, crusty and dirty. it has typhoon wheels powdercoated with bontrager cruiser tires. i threw on a a fitting pair of bars and stem. put on an awesome long springer seat. i had a black front sprocket in a box of bmx stuff and put it on. the fork is the original that i had painted orange for my last build but didn't use it. i painted over the orange w/semi black and scuffed through the paint in some spots. the bike rides great and is just a cool beater! 8) let me know what ya' think?

There's a bike with plenty of attitude...looks cool! :D

nice, simple and vintage! looks great. :D love those frames but they tend to run a little on the small side. or maybe im just getting larger!

Re: HORRIBLE HAWTHORNE

I like a lot of the stuff that turns up on this site but I still think my favorites are the Rustrats based on thirties balloon frames. In that category I think the Snyder “Zep” frame is one of the best looking starts. Glad to see this one has risen from the collapsed shed in Tacoma where the bike was four owners ago and is now out plying the streets of North Vernon.

looks great
you need to toss this in this thread
if youre interested i can make you the mounting plate for the truss rods really cheap(my rrbbo #4 bike has one that i made for it and i still have the template)

Re: HORRIBLE HAWTHORNE

thanks guys! actually sensor, i have them but i put them on the orange bike i built a while back. :( i have an old schwinn in the bone yard i plan on taking the rods off of it and putting on the orange bike and putting the originals back on this one. hey rms37, can you date this for me exact? you seem to know alot about these. or anyone else out there?

Re: HORRIBLE HAWTHORNE

Exact dating on Snyder frames is not possible until someone finds factory documents relating serial numbers to build dates.

Variations of the “Zep” or Snyder fastback sport frame were produced between late 1935 and 1940. Several manufacturing and design changes were made to the frames and bikes during this time and can be useful in narrowing down when a bike was produced. The other thing that can be helpful for dating purposed is the paint pattern but that doesn’t help this time out.

The integral dropout tangs were probably first applied to these frame in late 1937 or 1938 so your bike is not earlier than that. The other telling feature is that it used the straight truss rods instead of the later waterfall style which were generally adopted in late 1937. Taken together I would guess the bike was produced between the fall of 1937 and the spring of 1938 but could it be later if the supply of straight truss rods took a while to be exhausted.

rms37, i take it these frames are one of your specialties! :D the only paint i can make out is there is white scallops you can faintly see on the front of the frame. thanks for the info. it's cool to think i am cruising around a bike this old in its original patina! 8)

Re: HORRIBLE HAWTHORNE

This is beautiful.. I Iove the mix of super-old-and-rusty frame with clean black rims and those modern-looking Bontrager tires. Great looking "beater".
