How skinny can I go?

I have a crusier wheelset. How skinny can I go with the tires? Can I put mtb slicks on it? I have balloons on the wheels now but those won't look right with what I will be doing with this build.

I think the most important thing is that the bead diameters match. Other than that, I think the widths are pretty forgiving.

If you go too skinny, you'll pinch or even roll the bead right out of the rim! If you don't feel like measuring stuff and/or converting to metric, I'd say that 1.5" is the smallest I'd go on the typical cruiser rim. They make 1" and 1.25" 559 slicks, but they're typically for recumbents and such, with skinnier rims. Harsh ride, too.
