I have a 2x8 with a 1/4" hole in it. I set the link over the hole. Then I drive the pin almost all the way out of that link with a hammer and drift and stop just before the pin comes out of the other side. Then I bend the chain a little to the side so the link I am removing slips off the pin. Then simply put the new end back on and squeeze the pin back through in a vise. Pretty simple actually.
