As the old adage goes, "they just don't build 'em like they used to". But does this hold true for hubs? 3-speed and coaster-brake, specifically.

I'm not too concerned about being period-correct with my builds, and I'm not necessarily looking to restore bikes to original. I just want to slap together some old rusty parts and make cool looking bikes that ride well. So is it even worth scouring swap meets and Craigslist for an old clunker to grab a hub off of, or am I better off just buying a new one? We all know those old hubs could take a beating, do the new ones live up to that reputation?

I want to lay down some sick skids, and not worry about blowing up my hub if I rag on it too hard 8)

If you just cruise around they are ok.Tear them down and pack grease in them.I have a no-name and a Falcon and the look the same. They are not as good as the old Bendix.I like the Shimano single and 3sp hubs.

I guess it depends on the bike. My 1937 TruSport is the one bike that I have that is closest to being "all original", and I'm inclined to keep it that way (New Departure Skip Tooth). On the other hand, I'm starting to amass a collection of assorted parts. If it means putting a Chinese made WalMart wheel on a recent find to make it road-worthy, I don't have a problem with it. Ultimately I'll replace stuff like that with an American Made component because, well, I like it like that!!
