Lets say I wanted to rebuild a schwinn krate, like my 07., could I buy a 20" BMX bicycle and cleanly switch over the wheels., chain wheel and crank..etc..?

Sorta, Kinda Yes... But there are other details. What kind of tires are you using? many BMX bikes have knobby tires on them. I would find something with a street tire on it. I have found a lot of old used unloved bikes and put the parts on a bike that people could love much easier.
Are you going to keep it or sell it.
What is a Rebuild?
One speed or multi speed?
Brakes?
Do you want to make it really nice or just a rider?
Who do you sell it to? Johnny Rider or Bike Collector Billy?
Johnny Rider will buy a not perfect used bike for 85.00 in a heartbeat.
I have seen Krate repop bikes sell at General Swap meets for 35.00 to 225.00 usually in rough to good condition. But that is to Johnny Rider . I usually quickly buy the ones for 35.00 and clean them up and put them back out for sale at a profit in the future.
I have a few lower quality 20 inch BMX bikes. Some have road tires on them and some have Knobby tires on them. I trade stuff back and forth to get the best combination.
If I am going to sell a cheap bike I get it riding and detail the heck out of it before finding a home for it. No ripped seats and no Icky (girl word) grips. I usually sell them cheap. I do it more for a hobby than a money maker. But I always get paid for my time.
Good Luck, I hope this may have answered a few questions.

Sales or rider isnt really in my mindset with this diagnosis. Say I get a 20" BMX bike.. and I wanted to put the wheelset and chain on the krate., maybe the forks too.. is that possible without additional hardward? [assuming the donor bike has all the fittings]

I guess were talking a rider., nothing glammy or over the top., I have a Banana and sissy, so that covers the seat, but Id like to get it rolling.. wouldnt the wheels fit the same? 20" bike chain should reach just the same.. Im really concerned more about forks., could I just switch over a BMX neck and forks to the krate frame like another BMX?

Most of the time and Sometimes.
Do you want it to have a BMX look or do you want it to a Krate look.
Your Krate fork already matches the paint on the frame. If you get a Pink Bmx fork. Well.

It hasnt got a fork. It was a cheapo springer that came on it and I sold that a while back for needed cash to have the Columbia running. Im probably gonna use the BMX forks, wheels, crank if possible, Handlebar neck and chain.I have the seat and bars. with sissy.

The short answer is, yes, most likely. Most BMX bikes use 20" wheels and the American BB, so they'll work. The fork is trickier, as some newer BMX have 1 1/8" headtube, I think, when the Krate will have 1". A cheaper or vintage BMX bike will have 1", and it should work.

Thats what I was hoping to hear. [how old of BMX for forks you reckon?]

lastly.., do I need to worry about a crank donor? we all know how AMAZING the 07 and following krates had for Chain Wheels and crank..

Thank you for the reply!~

Here's the brief-yet-comprehensive list of potential problems:
1- brakes. If the bmx has 990-style u-brakes, they won't fit your "Schwinn" without an adaptor plate. If it's a centermount sidepull caliper brake, it should fit.
2- headset: You might find bmx bikes with 1" "mini" headsets with 30mm cups, 1" "Bmx" headsets with 32.5mm cups, or 1 1/8" headsets with 34mm cups. BMX bikes could come with any of these size headsets, in either threaded or threadless flavors. Not sure what an 07 Apple Krate has, but earlier repop Krates had 1" headsets... There are kludges to deal with many of these conversions, but not all.
3- fork. You gotta make sure that the donor bmx's steerer tube is long enough to work in your Schwinn's headtube. Too long can be cut down, but too short won't work without some welding. Also, the above stuff about the headset will impact fork compatibility, too, which in turn effects stem compatibility....
4- BB. BMX bikes can have American, Mid, Euro, or Spanish BB shells. PRobably others, these days; i can hardly keep up. If the donor bmx has an American BB, it'd be a direct swap. If it has a "mid" set-up, you'd need to find some american-sized cups that are compatible with that specific mid BB's bearings. For the other setups, depending on the crank's details, you may or may not be able to get a compatible american-sized BB to run the crank. (In most cases, you would be able to run it with the proper adaptors, but easiest to find a donor bike with an American shell, for direct drop-in compatibility.)
5-ground clearance. A lot of bmx bikes have high BBs and run 175 or 180mm cranks. These may scrape the pavement if you run them on your stingray frame.
6-Tire clearance. I have no idea what an 07 krate will clear, but most bmx bikes will have a 20x1.95 tire (406x50mm).... measure the frame before you go out looking.
7-seatpost. There are a zillion seatpost sizes, and it's gotta be exactly right, or you'll damage your frame. It's possible that you'll find the exact size (i think your frame takes a 1" post, which is common for bmx bikes), but you'll want to confirm this. Best bet is to not worry about it, as seatposts are cheap, and you can get a different one if the donor bike's post doesn't fit your frame.

OK, yeah, that wasn't brief at all. But, take heart: low-buck bmx bikes are cheaper than h2o; you can build that Krate for cheap if you patiently scour craigslist for rock-bottom prices...

I sure appreciate it 808, Often chiming in with an answer full of enthusiasm for that persons build or situation as if it were your own.

With the above said, I might try to find the stock parts for it in the event I cannot sort my priorities with shipping in the time the buyer would like., It feels best to find another one of these with stock parts and jsut switch out what I can when I can., but making it a rider if the buyer backs out is my only contingency,. all in all, as long as he stays interested, and wants it., I have no intentions of trying to find the parts for this myself.

Honestly, I hope it helps my sale to have the conversion information here, and if nothing else have it to look back on for reference come another 20" build down the line.

Thanks again for all the info guys, Its been a learning experience and one within an hour of waking up. [better retention ;) ]

Zombie,
Picked up a Schwinn Starlet 20" girls bike Saturday @ St. Vinnies.
Looks kinda like this one,
k2-_99c74dee-e9e9-46c2-9c08-e5b1fc689601.v1.jpg

frame is slightly different but Nice BMX large front hub, nice straight aluminum wheels std caliper brakes coaster brake in rear nary a scratch on it (has dirty white tires on it) anyways its made by Pacific cycle (same guys that made your clone stingray) and cost me $8! The boys bikes at St. Vinnies are beat and cost twice as much - prob way to go for cheap parts.;)

Hey Thanks! Parts sound better than my Krate., though its just a fallback idea, Im glad I have the detailed information to do it now.,
I sure appreciate the trouble, Farmer!~

No problem, I get a chance tomorrow I could take a few pics maybe meassure the headset. I was amazed at the condition of this bike - guess pink really makes a bike unsalable on the used market.

Here are pics of bike I bought Saturday. Thought it was pink but it is like pearl blue with purple - Ugly!

Pretty sure I have one of them in my parts pile, not a Schwinn though, must be a different Pacific Cycles brand...

Luke.

Horsefarmer, It was really nice to take the time to help Zombie to find parts cheap for use to build another bike. Very Cool of you. There are so many ways to recycle parts on different builds.

Thanks Guys!
Been looking for old BMX bikes since I started my Klunker build. This bike was outstanding because many of the parts (goose neck, brakes and wheels) were so cool.:cool2:
May recycle bike for a grand kids bike or who knows some kinda rat project. Funny thing about that stem, it was covered up by stupid vinyl Velcro pad - Good thing I thought, " whats under that thing ?":)
