I have wanted to be able to ride a bike to work for a long time and since we moved in January I am close enough (6 miles now vs 20 before). I work third shift and I have to get the kids off to school in the mornings so until summer I am going to have to be happy commuting on the weekends I work over time. Last night was the first opportunity I got to ride.
I had been planning on using a nice '84 Sekai road bike I picked up a while back but opted for my '66 Schwinn Traveler instead. I moved the LED lights from the Sekai to the Traveler and hit the road.
The ride at 11:00 pm wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. The three speed SA handled the moderate hills well. The worst part of the ride is the 2 1/2 mile stretch with no sidewalks, bike paths, or street lights on a four lane with a speed limit of 45. At that time of night the traffic was minimal and i was only passed by 5 or 6 cars and only one lady turning off a side street tried to hit me. How she didn't see me I don't know- blinking super bright white leds and the Miller generator light up front and the same in red on the back. :?
The trip only took me about 30 minutes and a top speed of 25mph with a tail wind. When I got home the Wifey asked if I was going to do it again and I answered with an emphatic yes.
More pics of the bike here.
