..I found a Schwinn today..
literally, I was riding over to visit my Sister and
I went down the back alleys as I always do :mrgreen:

I found a Schwinn in a Garbge Pile.
It says Cruiser on the Frame and it has a Derailer dangling off the rear.
No Wheels,
Front and back Lever brakes.
Forks are bent together.

The serila number is Y6100171
I searched the net and came up with nothing for the serila number.

looking at others bikes here, I am guessing it's a Cruiser 5
what year I do not know,
but looking at The Neck and Bars it looks 80's ish

Any help on this one would be great,
Thanks,
Kev.

white face badge held on with 2 screws or black face badge w/o screws?

check out the "SERIAL NUMBERS" paragraph

the blue cruiser 5 pic above serial is MR996893, so it was made in December 1980

if the serial # is on the head tube then

first letter = month

a = january
b = february
c = march
d = april
e = may
f = june
g = july
h = august
j = september
k = october
l = november
m = december

second letter = year

a = 1965
b = 66
c = 67
d = 68
e = 69
f = 1970
g = 71
h = 72
j = 73
k = 74
l = 75
m = 76
n = 77
p = 78
q = 79
r = 80
s = 81
........ and so on

#'s are the defining #s

just like car VIN's I and O arent used to avoid confusion with 1 and 0

dont know if this helps ya out exactly though. plus the schwinn headbadge says "chicago on it.

the 01 green cruiser 4 has taiwan stickers all over it BTW

edit - http://oldroads.com/sh_sn.asp

looks like it s probably an import schwinn but im not an expert, so

on my reliability lol

Electro-forge frame or regular welding?

Sheldon Brown’s website has a good article by Marc S. Muller explaining how the electro-forge frames were made:

http://sheldonbrown.com/varsity.html

The location of the serial number will also provide clues, on the rear dropout = pre-1970, on the head tube = post-1970

Regardless of the DOM or country of origin, you can’t beat the price – FREE!

well, the serial numbers are on the Rear drop out.
But this bike has a Sticker on the Center seat tube that says Schwinn..

The neck looks like an 80's style BMX head.
The Grips as wll look 80's

I'll pick it up Today in my Work Tuck and snap
a few pictures of it.

Thanks for the link MP,

Kev.
