people i hardly know seem to stop by and ask for help with repairs, or hard to find parts, bikes etc.

yesterday i ground down all the cable clips for a guy who was building a fixie and got a pretty cool bridgestone disk brake and bag of parts for my efforts. (old ccm medalist parts)

the day before, while i was out. a young kid left this with nadine. said he thought i'd appreciate it. i'm not sure where it came from. welds are pretty rough, but i got some idea's for this frankenbike.

if it means free bikes, i'll gladly except the role. :)
just call me uncle bike dude. :)

i got stopped last night by a neighbor i didnt even know i had and got asked,
"so who builds all these crazy bikes?"
"me."
"really?? wow. where do you build them, the bike shop up on 14 mile?"
"no, my garage."
"wow thats cool. so does your dad ever help you?"
"not really."
"no way, how old are you?"
"im 16."
"oh wow, so you gonna do this for a living when your older?"
"maybe with cars"
 at least im noticed.

Yep, me too! I've had a couple of the neighborhoods little girls stop by saying their bikes are making as funny noise, turns out it's that little spring in their coaster hubs drying out. I've got this down to a ten minute repair. The boys seem to go thru inner tubes and pedals quite frequently.
The adults have to pay for their repairs though. :D

love those old spin on disc set ups.

kinda the opposite for me. i try to hold people off from my house and bikes unless i'm out on the streets riding. too many bad experiences with theft. not very neighborly i know, but... *shrugs*.

at best, like if a nephew or niece comes around i'll try to hand them some tools and sit back as much as i can and talk them through the repair.

BECOMING the neighborhood bike guy?    ...You ARE the neighborhood bike guy! Welcome to the club. I fix more kids bikes then anything else. My pet peeve is BRAKES. The majority of kids I see riding around here have NO brakes (their parents should be whipped). I've fixed dozens of brakes for free. Bike shops over here "refuse" to fix WalMart bikes, they leave them to dummies like me.
