Yep, that gray primer is looking good! I just had a thought on the tank add-on. What if you flip it 180 degrees, and then swing it under the bar instead of on top?
So the tail end is jammed up in near the head tube? It might fill up that space nicely.....

I hate letting go of stuff... I have acquired more than 30 guitars and I'm gaining on bikes...
I definitely agree on it being a rider. The only way I'd build (or keep) a bike I couldn't ride was if I was building a sweet wall hanger for the man cave.

I sold this one a while back for 250.00

after installing a Jazz pup in the neck position... started with a bare body and did a fake worn off Jaco finish on it. Pick guards are made from high hat cymbals (cuz they're thicker)
