Quick background: I bought a bike for $20 for the wheels for my son's custom. Didn't know what it was. Was told it was an AMF Renegade. I was going to scrap it. But... then I got to liking the idea of what I could do with it. So now I'm going to restore it. In my search for parts I found bits of another one, so I picked it up. The frames aren't exactly the same. We'll call the first one I got #1, and the one I received last night #2. Now onto the pics...

Here's #2's frame. It's got a guard I bought off Ebay that didn't fit #1. Fits #2 like a glove, but I don't like how that long tab of metal looks. I do like the rear fender, but it's got rust issues I'd have to tackle, and a dent. And the big problem: The sprocket doesn't fit under the chain guard!

Here's a close up of the sprocket. Notice how it's offset from the center of the BB shell.

And here's a pic with a small Schwinn sprocket I have that will fit. I don't like it. Too small. (my image hosting turned the pic. Dunno why)

Here's #1 with #2's home made chopper forks and the parts I plan on using for the build. The rear fender is from another bike, and I've made it fit. But it's shorter than the other fender, and stops right at the sissy bar. The brace at the seat stays is strange, and very different from #2, which looks like it's actually cut to fit a fender. This one is more square-ish with a tab that I've made fit into a recess in the fender. I'm not sure it I like that. Notice how the other chain guard fits much better, and the sprocket fits under it. From a distance, the forks look ok.

Here's the forks up close. The welds look... home made I guess. Now, I'm going to put a fade paint job on it. So maybe I can smooth up the welds and put the fade right here? I'm also thinking of adding a cross brace so I can attach a front fender. What do you think about that?

The dilema... Which should I use?

#1 has frame issues. I'd have to fill in two holes in the frame and get that all smoothed out. And there is a brace under the chain stays that fell off I have to re-weld back on. #1's chain guard looks better, but the upper fender brace is weird, although I can make it work with that fender, but the fender is shorter and I don't like that as much.

#2 has that guard issue being too short, and the guard doesn't look as good. The rear fender fits better, and looks longer, but has a dent and needs the rust cleaned. I'm worried about pitting damage or loss of chrome.

The chopper forks look ghetto. I'd rather have a set of Jaxon drag forks, but I like my kids too much to sell them.

To my eye... you need to get the large chainwheel, proper longer fender, and gray chainguard all on the same frame. It matters least which frame. Are you sure you want your child to ride that fork?

At least those fork blades are welded. When we were kids, we just stuck the fork ends in the cut off blade and rode. Still have my original front teeth. :p Gary

I did exactly the same thing! I shudder when I think of it.
