I needed to do a couple of site visits on Lake Winnipesaukee this week over on Rattlesnake Island. Its about a mile and a quarter from the main land. The weather was as clear as the ice it seemed that taking a bike out there would be fun. So last night i mouted up a pair of studded tires on the Schwinn Rolling Rock and then found the rear hub needed attention, and the bottom bracket. 1/2 an hour later i was good to go and loaded up the bike.

Set out this morning at about 8:30. It was cold but luckily there wasn't much wind. I think in total we rode about 6.5 - 7 miles. The ice seemed to be 8" - 12" thick.

Here is a big build up of ice on the breakwater that protects the island access road. Those are other breakwater's in the background covered in 3-4feet of ice.

Looking to the North East up the lake towards the Ossipee Range. Too bad Mt.Washington wasn't visible. That's the North tip of Rattlesnake Island on the right.

I needed a strong cup of coffee by the time we got back. 8)

That is tooo cool! The last pic looks like its not frozen and you're just standing on the surface  If you wore some shorts and a t-shirt for that shot people would accuse you for photoshopin' the image

That must have been a blast!
I love the Rolling Rock bikes and I was weened on old # '33' (Western PA native).
Too bad they sold out to Budweiser, who then sold out to InBev. Guess that makes Bud and RR imports now....
Oh well, Yuengling is still the better beer anyway.

Holy cow...that makes me nervous just looking at it...ha ha.

I think you win the "riding a cruiser in the most extreme conditions" trophy. :D

very cool! the other month, when it was cold, about zero and greenhorn lake froze over, i wanted to ride across it, but unfortunatly, i find our lakes don't freeze over as well as those back east.

Mannn...no kiddin'! That was my first reaction, too...
On the one hand, looks like great fun, on the other, kind of scares the crap out of me!

Hey that's a great looking bike! I don't know if I would do that ride with it though... I have bad memories of riding on a frozen swamp down here as a kid with my first Columbia mountain bike. Another kid grabbed onto my rear rack and BAM - I went down fast and hard.

Look sweet though on that glassy ice!
