Internal cable routing

So I am in the process of putting a shimano inter 8 on my middle weight and I am wanting to route the cables internally. I have been reading and it seems that most who do it leave the jacket on the outside and bare cable in the tube. Is there any reason I cant just run the whole cable jacket and all in the tube? And has any one here have experience with it? I think the lines on the bike will look better with the hidden cables. Or is there a trick way to run them on the outside? Ideas?

if ya want to spend the money to run the casing from one end to the other then not a prob. you can do it either way.

I just drill the hole in the frame and use the cable housing all the way.

Ok that was what I was thinking so housing the whole way is fine. Now should I exit before the bottom bracket or is there enough room to have the cable head towards the rear dropouts then exit. I was hoping I could tuck it under the crank and get enough clearance, maybe use an adel clamp to hold it on the inside bottom of the bottom bracket. Is that possible?

just about anything is possible. ya just have to try it. there should be room to do that. take a look inside to see.

keep in mind that the more bends in the cable housing = more drag/friction and worse shifting

I will, that is good advice. I do have another question. Going though the cranks it seem that the cable will drag a little. I will be running the housing all in the tube so how bad will it be having the cable drag on the center of the crank. I know that eventual it will where out but how long will it take. It will have grease on it and the crank is smooth so i think it will last a good while. Has any one else done this?

My worthless advice on that...

Strip the vinyl cover off where it passes through the B/B.

You dont want it getting ripped off of there and ending up in the bearings.

I was thinking if i polish the center of the crank and grease it up good that it would take a long time for it to ware out. Has any one else tried this? I know I can't be the first.

I predict...

Its gonna make noise.

Its gonna wear out.

Its gonna shift Up and Down with every pedal stroke by itself if you have an offset crank center that hits it.


That cable needs to be tight all the time.

Ya I think you are right, I wasn't thinking about cable tension. Maybe back to the drawing board and go with external cable routing. I just wish there was a way to do it that was a little trick , cleaner that just cables running down the side.

Run the cable on the BOTTOM of the tubes.

Secure it with Zip Ties...like ZOOT

That may be what I end up doing. I wounder if I take a piece of fuel line and bend it in a shape so ti goes around the crank and a guide and tuck it in there if it will work.

maybe epoxy the tube in bb to hold it out of the way just clean it very well n scuff her up with 36 grit so itll stick :?: :idea:

Remove 1 bearing cup. Then roll a piece of sheet metal into a tube. Insert it into the bottom bracket and reinstall the bearing cup. The metal coil will hold the cable out of the way of the crank. Take your time, the amount of effort is = to the results, ie (poop in, poop out)

I used automotive brake line for my shifter cable crossover on my Flying Merkel...its under the seat.

Ya I think that will work, I have a come coil in the garage.

So I think I found a fix, that will secure the cable as well. I knock out the bearing cup as suggested and saw that there was a little lip on the top tube big enough to drill a hole. I used a clear piece of hose to represent the cable, because I haven't bought on yet . And it seems it will work there will be a little angle on the hose but I think it will work just fine. Also it should give me more that enough clearance for the crank.
