I just picked up this 1939 Elgin.
It seems that I've ventured into a realm with very little known history. These bikes are just downright tough to dig up info on. Also, the parts are scarce. Replacement grips on Ebay are $58. I'm sorry, that's just ridiculous.
Is anyone making a repro pre-war torpedo style grip in white or off-white these days???

Oooh yes, that's a good one too!!

Thanks everybody for pointing me in the right direction!
That Elgin was stored indoors since 1939, but it has been heavily used and needs A LOT of love.
I even have a photograph on the way of that bike's original owner riding it in a parade in the summer of 1940 when she was 9yo. Cool huh?

Wow that is great that you have the chance to get a glimpse into history of the bike. Post it when you can.

Those grips are very cool. I've never seen any like that before. Wonder what they're from....

I have no idea what they are from but I might use them on my new Hercules that I got yesterday. I'm thinking in three directions on it though, either antique white with colored gussets and use the white grips, Raw, or Flat black. Leaning tword Raw or flat black as I have two un-used cans of black on my shelf.
