Was about 2 miles out when this rubbing sound started. I thought maybe the chainguard shifted. But when I pulled over to check it out, WHOA there's a huge bulge on the side of my old Allstate balloon. I let a bit of air out and figured well it'll get me home, and it did. This pic is in my driveway. It's STILL holdin' air!!!

Shadow looks pretty cool tho....
Anybody else got pictures of some  blown out tires?

Carl.

I recently had a kenda k80 start tearing apart like that. I replaced it before it got that bad though.

They look awesome and the fact that there's any still in service at this point is a testament to their durability... but that is one truly vicious blow-out you had there. =P

THAT is why I save vintage tires for display only. Once they're gone, they're gone and they're not making anymore of them.

There's plenty of new tires out there that are great quality, ride nice, and look great. I can't imagine anybody using tires and tubes that were made when Roosevelt or IKE were President, yet I see this all the time. It's unsafe and a blowout like this could have been especially dangerous if it were on the front wheel.

I have new Michelin Country Rock tires on my rat and they're great. Kenda also makes good tires for the money. Go down to your local bike shop and shop around, you'll be glad you did!

Yeah... I have vintage guitars people think I should display them too. But I take em' out and play them. Guys like me make your old tires worth more... I use mine.
I'm tempted to put a bandana tourniquet on it and keep on riding...

Guitars are one thing. They can be repaired and restored. I'm just giving my opinion though.
All good just having fun with ya...
Although a vintage tire doesn't come close to being worth what a vintage guitar is... My point being, display is fine if that's what your doing, but I play with mine... (guitars and bicycles)

I think that riding old tires is fine, as long as the rider is aware of the increased risks associated with doing so. I imagine GuitarCarl was already aware before this blowout, but at this point there can't be any doubt: he knows the risk.

Personally, I love fresh'n'new tires, although I tend to ride them until they're worn beyond what most folks would consider acceptable. But I feel like they just don't make new tires that look and feel like the old ones. Even repro-style tires still have a different vibe to them, if you know what i mean. The tread can be the same, but the feeling isn't....

Well let's see...My Cannondale Hybrid has new tires. Schwinn Traveler new on the way. Difference Engine new tires. SGT.ROCK new tires. ALEiN FiRE newish tires. Anything that moves with any speed has new or close to new tires, now my old cruiser Little Neutrino has a new-ish 26x1 3/8 on the front, but on the back I ran the tires that were on it when i found it Cuz they're nice old tires with treads on them, I wanted the big/little look, and it's a cruiser. I'm not bangin' thru the woods or haulin' downhill. I understand safety and I promise I won't do it no more... as soon as I burn up the old Allstate that was on the front when I got it...

Carl.

A loud noise at 10pm...
