The one that it came with is short and does not do a very good job of keeping my bike from falling. Any suggestions on what type might work? I was thinking maybe one that attaches on both sides of rear axle but am not sure.

Check your kickstand in the raised position to see that it is close to the frame. If it is away from the frame , then it will be short when it is down. The rear mount kickstand works well for me on a low center of gravity Dyno stretch. But, on a high center of gravity bike with a rear rack, that kickstand failed to hold the bike up. The 2 leg kickstands work best on a level hard surface.

Thanks. I have a really cool kickstand that would work if the sliding hole at the bottom bracket was more centered to the left. The stock bike kickstand is centered right of the the bracket. What I can do is use a drill bit to center it and it should do the trick. The vintage kickstand is about an inch longer. Just hate the idea of modifying frame.

Yeah. that is the old-style kickstand, common on most 1999's (and older).
I noticed that although the bikes were mostly made in Taiwan, the cheesy kickstands say Made in China, and are about 3/4" - 1" too short. Also, the fastener location is off-center, in a bad way, toward the chain ring - so a typical Wald kickstand will bump into it.
Perhaps a solution might be one of those after-market, two-sided kickstands that raise one wheel off the ground(?). Or a rear-axle mounted kickstand(?).

Yeah I have always wondered why these obviously wrong sized kickstands mass it onto these really cool bikes! I have ordered a two sided kickstand which mounts on the two rear lugs. Hopefully it works out.
