My oldest granddaughter recently went to her first swap and picked up a 24" Murray built Sears girls bike.

I'm taking it apart to clean and regrease everything, I noticed it has a Komet super rear hub. Now I'm a fan of the flite series Murray's, but I've never seen one with a Komet.
Was this standard issue in the 60's? The wheels seem to be a matching pair, but none of my Murray's have Komet hubs.

And how does it come apart?
On the drive side I have what looks like a snap ring, but it doesn't move.
One the other side there's a small nut with a notch on each side, is it a reverse thread?

None of it is reverse-threaded; you're probably going to want a small-diameter hook spanner to get that hardware loose. Some folks replace the hardware with a more traditional jam-nut, but i bit the bullet and got the proper tool. FWIW, I tend to attack a F&S teardown/repack from the brakeside of the hub. (Most other coasters, I come in from the driverside.)

AFAIK, they all take regular snap-rings. Is it possible yours is corroded in place?

Lastly, see how the axle is squared-off at the end? Best move for adjusting these is to reassemble them kind loose but with the driveside jam-nut/lockring tight agains the driver's cone, put the hub in the frame with the axle nuts loose, and adjust it on the frame by tightening the entire assembly, simply by turning the flats of the axle with a wrench. So much easier than what i do on hubs with round axles; less trial-and error.

Thanks.
I figured I'd have to get the proper wrench. I think you're right about the snap ring, I've got it soaking right now. Should be able to get it apart tomorrow, I hope.

Awesome; Supers really are great hubs. A very balanced blend of "stop" and "coast"; in my experience, most coaster hubs either stop really well but suffer from excessive drag, or roll very well but suffer from poor braking. The Komet Super is more of a 50/50....

PS- your Super looks different from mine; you got that cool tin-can style hubshell. Mine is more of a "stepped" design.

This is the first one I've had, I had to do some searching to see how it goes together.
