Somebody told me to post this so the whole gang can check it out. These are for my build-off bike. Ok, here goes...
Started with these wheels I got from Yeshoney. I think he said they were from an old Huffy.
Stripped them down to the hoops, sanded the corrosion off, hit with a few coats of primer and a few coats of olive green paint. Shown here on display with new stainless spokes and a pair of NOS blackout hub shells.
Ok, next I put a layer of painters tape on the rim surface to protect the finish in case of a spoke mishap. Just poke the spoke end through the tape and work the nipple through too. The tape rips just enough and doesn't get in the way. Note: THIS WORKS!
Here we are starting the first course of spokes. I went with the basic plan outlined by the Sheldon Brown site, but I had another rim I used as a guide too.
Starting the second course of spokes:
Third course done:
And the last set of spokes:
At this point I just pulled the tape off around the nipples. There was a little bit of residue on a few nipples and since I didn't put a single scratch in the tape, I figured I could do without it. WRONG! I tried lacing the second wheel and didn't put the tape on. Sure enough, I put 2 nasty scratches in the paint!!!
So, I got them both together and snugged up the spokes. Still gotta pull the internals from my old hubs and put them in the new shells and then try to tension and true the wheels. Overall, they look pretty good although the scratches bug me. Gotta try to touch them up.
