I was just given an old Schwinn Prelude road bike with Look clipless pedals on it. I will probably put some flats on it, but if I can find a set of used shoes I'd like to try these pedals out, it's just I've never had any clipless pedals or shoes... what do I need?

if you want to use the clipless pedals you'll need a set of Look cleats and a pair of compatible cycling shoes. The cleats bolt into the bottom of the shoe and once they are adjusted correctly, you just stomp on the pedal to lock your foot in. They'll take a bit of time to adjust and you'll probably fall more than once before you remember to twist your ankle sideways to release your foot.
A cheaper and painless alternative? A cheap set of 9/16th pedals and a thin 15mm wrench. Remember, the left hand pedal is a left hand thread. 8)

I've got plenty of 9/16th pedals and a full set of Park thin wrenches. The cleats seem cheap enough, and I'm not afraid of used shoes, just wondering how "universal" the bolt holes are on the shoes to different style cleats.

A lot of shoes have the slots for shimanos' SPD clipless system. I don't think they will work with the Look cleats, the hole pattern is different.

Maybe I should just buy some cleats and drill holes in a pair of my Chucks and bolt them on.

that wont work so well... the shoes have rigid soles because the cleat mount is so small. Chucks would kill your feet...

most new shoes have holes to match both cleats i think, but any old road shoe will pretty much be for look cleats..

I just need to cut out some aluminum insoles then.

I guess anything's possible...

Haha, ouch.

My cowboy boots should be stiff enough, but then I'm not sure I'm ready for the attention I'd get riding a road bike with shorts and cowboy boots on.

They might not be comfortable but they would be very 8) 8) 8)
