I've been wanting to make a shop stool from a bike frame after seeing the different stools made on RRB. You may recall I got a free bike as recorded in Mayhem in Miami .
Wildcat pointed out the frame of the 1978 Schwinn was kinked behind the headtube. That gave me a donor bike.
After sawing off the frame just ahead of the seat tube, I cut the brake bridge. That was a helpful tip I read on RRB. It makes it easier to spread the frame for more stability. Then I filled the remaining brake bridge nubs with epoxy putty. Using a hole saw I made wooden plugs for the top tube, bottom tube and BB openings. Then I installed a 1/4-20 thread insert to attach "SS fender washers with SS 1/4 - 20 bolts. I used a threaded rod and acorn nuts on the BB. Also, put in some Rivnuts to hold a water bottle cage.
Once finished I added a seat.
There was a kink in each chain stay from spreading. Since I had some extra epoxy putty made up I smoothed out those kinks.
The stool replaced my old hardwood D'Addario strings stool I got using points from D'Addario banjo, dobro and guitar strings. That stool has seem better days.
