A rider broke the fork while riding off a curb. Normally a Trek can take that but in this case he had the stem just 1" in the steerer tube. The steerer tube broke right at the base of the stem, right in the middle of the threads.
Lots of flexing of the steerer tube in a stress riser point (threads!) cause the break. The curb was just the final straw.

I happened to be in my LBS last summer when a girl came in with her dads full suspension aluminum Trek. seat tube was snapped right off the frame. She had let her boyfriend borrow the bike, since he was too big for it he raised the seatpost so just 2" was in the frame. pretty much game over for that frame, and possibly the boyfriend too?
