I normally dont do much with with the rear hub on mountain bikes but I had a guy drop off a rear rim with a broken axle so I took them in the shop after he left and opened the "parts bag" he left thinking ok he brought me all the pieces and I can just slip a new axle in it. Well no such luck, when I open the paper towel theres the 2 pieces of axle and nothing else. So after checking in the hub I call the guy and ask where the bearings are and he says hes not for sure so I ask him if they was bearing rings or loose bearing and he dont remember So heres my question. The non drive side a bearing ring fits in perfect but the cassette side looks as if it was loose bearings, could it have had a bearing ring on one side and loose bearings on the other? any help would be great.
heres the axle pieces

Heres looking down into the cassette which looks to be just a flat dust shield in it

Thanks scrumblero for the bearing count. I ended up using an allen wrench and fresh grease to put them in. Really should have my morning cup of coffee before I start working on bikes in the morning
