I dont know much about bikes like this, I told a friend Id try to get some info on it for him.

The serial Number Reads; GG707054 on the rear left dropout.
I asked if there was anything under the crankset, and he said it was stamped 68k

If its any help.. he lives in Perth, Western Australia.
And here are the photos:

+1 to SSG's assessment: Definitely a roadbike, probably Japanese or Taiwanese, definitely low-end. Has little to know collector/resale value, but can likely be built into a nice, practical bike.

I appreciate the help, fellas. I forwarded the info and the additional webpage.
He seems still happy with his bike, and it evidently didnt cost him much, so alls well that ends well.

I think Giant made bikes start with a G serial number.
Thanks, Ill pass that along. I was browsing some serial numbers myself and came up with some insane list of what each digit meant and I felt like I was reading Sanyo Stereo Instructions. :p

Run of the mill steel road bike, probably 10 or 12 spd.. Neither junk nor special snowflake. I would guess Giant as well, but don't take it to the bank.
