I need to build 2 old Schwinn bicycles into multispeed machines. I'd like to use an internal gear hub in each. It's looking like the viable options are the Sturmey Archer new SRC3 and the Shimano Nexus 3. Does anyone have experience with these hubs? I want something retro looking with a retro-looking shifter (not a big rubber/giant plastic thing), but which will give a decent gear range and have decent brakes. Which is the better option? I'm a Sturmey guy, but I have no experience with their new coaster brake hubs. I'd like to avoid the old TCW and SC3 models because they're pretty anemic and maybe go new.

I've got a bike with a Shimano Nexus 3 and one with a 1980's Shimano 3S, like them both a lot. My Nexus hub is the one with the coaster break. Breaking is very good with it IMHO. However for vintage looking shifter I think you might have to fabricate something custom. Haven't owned a Sturmey hub yet but I wouldn't hesitate owning or using one of theirs. I'd choose the brand and model that will fit your bikes best and have the gearing your looking for. Seems to be more options for different styles of factory made Sturmey shifters than there are for the Shimano's.

I have 2 bikes with Nexus 3 speeds (and 2 more un-mounted wheel sets) and really like them.

Search the HOW TO section for "nexus shifter" for some ideas about shifters mounted in other places than on the handlebars.
