hey everyone thought i would post some pics of my family's bikes let me know what u guys think 8)
no longer have the krate

64 schwinn sierra and 77 schwinn stingray 3 speed

67 schwinn stingray custom trike, owned by my younger brother has s-2 rear wheels and sun front rim with drum brake

my favorite "big blue" hawthorne all american built from the frame up

1968 schwinn apple krate also owned by my younger brother

schwinn typhoon cant remember the year

custom stretch bike made from a huffy frame (i think) by my older brother this ones a real LOWrider 8)

You have a couple of rare pieces in your collection, Schwinn produced the 15 speed Super Continental in 1962 and then renamed it the Sierra for 1963. Sierra 15 speeds were only produced in small numbers in 1963 and 1964 and then dropped as the model was not popular.

The Blue frame at the end of the pictures is an All American from 1940-1942. These bikes were designed by Walter Dorwin teague specifically as the top bike in the MW Hawthorne lineup for those years (although a few escaped to be branded otherwise) The frames were made by both CWC and Snyder. I imagine yours is a CWC version judging by the Swan fork but the proof is in the serial number and the configuration of the upper rear fender bridge.

wow :shock: thanks for the great info!!! i had suspected that it was a hawthorne but could not find any more info on it i will check on those numbers and i knew the sierra was unusual but didnt know they only produced it for such a short time makes me feel better about scroungeing up the $50 for it do u know if they came with weinmann wheels because ive seen one with s-7s :?:

Besides the serial number the quickest way to tell if the frame is CWC or Snyder produced is that CWC frames will have a straight upper rear fender bridge and Snyder frames will have an arched bridge.

The Sierra would have originally used the same 27"x1-1/4" steel rims as a contemporary Varsity. Looking at the sources I found, these rims are refered to as S-6 rims on a Schwinn Rim Chart but were also referred to as S-9 rims elsewhere.

i guess mine is a cwc because it has the straught upper bridge

he says thanks we usually just cruise around on the dry creek bike trail sometimes around downtown i actually started using the blue sierra to go to school
