So I decided to try to make a nice bike out of the 66 Typhoon I just got. Stripping it now, planning on painting it glossy black, and throwing on a new badge, a cool seat (not really sure which way to go there), apes, and a little white hot-rod style pin-stripe accents here & there, restored original rims & whitewalls, etc. Basically this is going to be one of the main bikes I ride around.

So, being new to old bikes, I have some questions:

( 1.) who (if anyone) sells old schwinn stuff? (grips, badges, decals, etc).
( 2.) has anyone powdercoated a frame? would you recommend it / do it again?
( 3.) It appears to have original wheels, but they look like french fried ass. Is there a recommended way to clean them up?
( 4.) where do I buy original schwinn color paint?
( 5.) pretty much taking this to bare metal, do I need to primer it before I paint? If so, what primer do you recommend?

I'll probably think of more as soon as I hit the "submit" button....

If those are the original wheels, then they are S7, and will only take Schwinn size tires. You'll have a much bigger choice of tires if you use standard 26" wheels. I would get them from a used bike to keep costs down. I don't think there is a particular black Schwinn paint, unless it's from before 1982. I like rustoleum enamel spray paint, but there are many good brands. Since it's down to bare metal, it'll have to be primered.

1. Memory Lane Classics has a wide selection of vintage bike parts, decals, and such.
2. I have had several frames powder coated and have been very happy with the results. The wide selection of colors is also a plus, the cost is a bit prohibitive to do on all my builds though.
3. If you want to clean the wheels up I recommend 0000 steel wool and Turtle Wax Chrome Polish, but like wildcat said they would be s-7s and tire selection is very limited.
4. http://www.hyper-formance.com has some original Schwinn colors available, but they will cost ya. I would recommend Rustoleum, Krylon, or Duplicolor paints.
5. You will need to prime the frame first. Usually your best bet is to use the same brand primer as the paint you choose.

Most of these items and many more are indexed in the How-To-Manual

Yeah, maybe running regular old chrome rims would be best. I don't want to make it too much of a p.i.t.a. to get tires.

What's a ballpark figure on powdercoating a frame? I'm planning on keeping this one, so I may go that route.

Does anyone still make the brick-pattern typhoon tires?

and would these be the original pedals?

I'm thinking I'm probably going to have it powder coated. A hundred bones seems pretty reasonable.

In that case should I bother stripping the rest of the paint? Will they treat it some other way regardless? media blasting or whatever?

If you want to "help" your powder coater, remove any and all grease and oils.

But if the powder coater is any good they will do this for you and blast all metal down completely to bare metal.

I have done some typhoon decals. Check my thread link at the bottom.

Are you planning on using fenders? If so I don't think 26x2.125 tires will fit. Your best bet is to do a complete mock up before you send it to paint.

I'm thinking no fenders.

I want to run big the bigger tires.

And I may be buying some decals from you here in the somewhat-near future.

I made the call today about the powder coating and I'll be dropping it off in a few days.
