So I went to my LBS to take a look at some handblebars and grips for my bikes and he starts asking me a couple of questions about what I'm doing. I proceed to talk about my flightliner and starliner and his first statement is, "you should get some new bikes because those aren't too collectable". Hmmm, what do I say to that? Yes, bikes can be collected and can be collectable if you want them. I personally want both of my bikes and think they are fun. Are they the pinnacle of collectability? Prob not. Should that matter? Hell no. Needless to say I bought what I needed for that moment and I don't think I'll be heading back to that shop anytime soon.

I have a friend who works at a lbs and he has gotten some pretty cool stuff by telling people that their old bikes are worthless or worth very little. He's got it down to science and can compare any of them with each other and always be able to point out exactly "what you need in a bike"! He's had people bring in their old bikes for trade or just flat out give him perfectly good bikes. Although we're friends, good friends, we don't agree on his philosophy of bikes and taking advantage of others. And in some cases had some major arguements over the subject. He still has some pretty cool stuff though! His bike collection is pretty extensive and he's gotten some very valuable stuff over the years. Some day I'll be able to catch him at home and grab some photo ops!

wow... thats pretty low. hustling somebody is one thing... but when you work at a bike store, people trust that you to be honest and give them accurate information. taking advantage of that trust is unethical, at the least.
