need help with my new (old) elgin....

Just bought this today and need some help identifying it. Its an elgin im assuming 1930's based on the pictures ive seen. The stem is broken and i need to replace it if anyone has anything laying around that would work for it. I attempted to locate a serial number and was not successful and i am hesitant to start scraping away paint on the BB. Any advice or feedback is much appreciated, especially locating a stem.

1938-42 with that frame style, with a 50s chainguard added. These were made by Murray, and I don't believe there's any serial number info going that far back for them. Very cool frame though! -Adam
