I have a SG-3C40 for some reason I have spend the better part of the afternoon trying to lace the darn thing.

I used the dimension from an SG-3C41 but now I'm starting to think the two are not the same b/c my spoke lengths appear to not be right.

what spoke length spokes have you all be using on a standard 26" wheel when lacing up a shimano 3 speed.

Perhaps you're using 4-cross spokes for 3-cross lacing or vice versa. :|

ya maybe try adding one or dropping one depending on whether they are too long or too short.

all rims have different ERD's so, its gonna be different from one hoop to the next

The info I use shows that both the 3C40 and 3C41 have a hub flange diameter of 59 mm. The 40 should have the same left and right offset (center to flange) at 27.5 mm, and the 41 should be 27.5 left, and 25.5 right.

Not all 26" rims have the same ERD's (Effective Rim Diameter). Some are flat, and some are drop center, so you need to measure your specific rim. Depending on the specific rim, and using a 3 cross pattern, your spokes can be somewhere between 255 and 265 mm (+/-).

What length are you trying to use, and are you doing 3 cross?

I measured the ERD to be 545mm.
I am doing a 3 cross I used the numbers for the hub from the below.

O.L.D. Flange Diameter Center to Flange Left Center to Flange Right
SG-S501 135 mm 92.6 mm 31.8 mm 25.5mm
SG-S500 135 mm 92.6 mm 31.8 mm 25.5mm
SG-8R36 132 mm 92.6 mm 30.25 mm 24.85mm
SG-8C31 132.3 mm 92.6 mm 30.1 mm 25 mm

SG-8R20 132 mm 92.6 mm 30.25 mm 24.85mm
SG-8C20 132.3 mm 92.6 mm 30.1 mm 25 mm

SG-4R41 130 mm 83.5 mm 29.6 mm 21.7 mm
SG-4R35 130 mm 83.5 mm 29.6 mm 21.7 mm

SG-7R46 130 mm 84.4 mm 29.55 mm 21.85 mm
SG-7C26 127 mm 87 mm 28.3 mm 23.1mm
SG-7C16 127 mm 83.5 mm 31.45 mm 22.25 mm

SG-3R40 120 mm 70 mm 26.4 mm 24.8 mm
SG-3R40 127 mm 70 mm 26.4 mm 24.8 mm
SG-3C41 120 mm 59 mm 28.8 mm 26.4 mm
SG-3C41 127 mm 59 mm 28.8 mm 26.4 mm

Well, the calculator I use is spitting out L=259.4, and R=257.1. Is this about what length you are using? What is it about the lacing that's not coming out right? Is this your first attempt at lacing?

The calculator I am using is giving me 259.2 and 258.9 and I am using 260 for both which should be ok.

This is not my first time but i am relatively new at doing this is probably my 6th wheel.

Oops.....I did a typo, Migs. Meant to say R=259.1. And your right....260 should work, so it's something in the lacing steps that's messing you up. Happens to me sometimes. I start the 9 on one side where the spokes feed inward on the hub, making sure the 1st spoke lines up properly with the valve stem hole. Then I do the 9 on the opposite side of the hub, also feeding inward on the hub, and leading the same direction as the first nine. This is where I usually make a mistake of placing the 1st spoke of the second set of 9 in the wrong opposing hole in the hub. Once I get this right, the rest is smooth sailing.

Here's a link to a video which shows the exact steps I follow, and at about 3:16 into it, the guy mentions the importance of the proper placement of the 1st spoke in the second set of 9. This is where I sometimes suffer a brain fart.
