Like the topic line says...will a Shimano Nexus twist grip shifter work with a Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hub? Just bought a new SX-RB3 that comes with a CLS30 stick shifter, not sure I want to go that route.

Let me know if you've done it or if you think it will/will not work.

Cheers,
Dr. T

Big chance,it'll work. 3-speed hubs have relatively big "gaps" between the 1st,2nd and 3rd gear. Nexus twistgrip works fine with an SRAM hub,so why not with SA? Only thing is: 1st and 3rd gear could be swapped on the twisterindicator (1st = 3rd and 3rd = 1st),so the twistgrip turns the other way 'round. I don't know which way the SA's gears work. At least it's worth to try. Good luck,Dr.T.

to my way of thinking an indexed shifter will pull or push the cable a set amount (length) of the cable.

if you could test both shifters to see how far the cable moves, and if they each move the cable the same amount, there is no reason that they won't work on the other brand hub.

If they move the cable differing amounts, probably not, the hub is "expecting" the cable to move a certain amount of length to engage it's gears.

and yes, I'd have to agree with wimpy, the pull/push could be reversed between the hubs, so the markings might be backwards.

just my .02.

My understanding is that the cable travel for shifting is different from SA to Shimano. Also, it seems to me that the the SA shifters travel a different amount between 1 - 2 then they do 2 - 3 (the latter has longer throw). The Shimano shifters (any from 333 to Nexus) seem to use the same throw for both shifts. I think for that reason, the two brands aren't readily compatible.

I have heard the same thing, but have never confirmed it.

Good luck Tank. Personally, I prefer sticks, since I grew up with a Screamer 2, but it depends on what look your going for.

Sounds like the parts are coming together for you.

The idea of mounting the stick on the chainstay (just below and behind the seat) would be cool, but i've already bought a set these grip-shift compatible grips from Felt, so...... I dunno.

TBD, that decision is WAY down the line..

I'm madly designing the front end, seating and, oh yeah, I still need to find time to get the frame welded.....hahahahaha

So are you going to mount it on the bars or beneath the seat?
