I have seen other versions of the same idea, usually more expensive though...

Luke.
Here is one from Bicycle designer that looks similar but more expensive:

I want to find the part to attach a rotor to a hub...

Available far cheaper on eBay from china...

Good calls Luke, I seen those...says they only work on rear horizontal drop outs, but look to be a similar animal. I guess it's time to start experimenting...prolly not too many 36 Colsons with discs around to check out...lol...

Guitar Carl, that's the easy part! If you google "flip flop hub disc brake" there are several companies making what Luke listed. Some even come with a wrench to get the ring off should you wanna flip flop on the road. I am gonna keep it SS, but same parts apply. This is probably a stupid idea on my part on a whole, but I like different with a little stupid thrown in :D

I'm not sure you can use those adaptors with everything. I think it takes some fudging, grinding, fiddling, coddling and bending to "get it to work" with old frames. I am sure they work ok with some frames or forks, but not all. Old Monarch springers have a disc brake caliper mount adaptor available that requires no mods when running a regular QR disc hub, and Sturmey makes some nice new 2-5 spd hubs with disc rotor mounts, on them, but again, the caliper mount would be the toughest part on the rear when modifying the frame to accept a caliper & disc hub w/o issues. Luke TJ's ORBO bike (unfinished) has a custom rear Caliper mount setup that would allow him to run a disc rear, but I haven't seen it in action yet. I want to see how he pulls it off w/o alignment problems. Still waiting for someone on RRB to get a disc brake caliper post-style mount tab custom welded to a Schwinn, Roadmaster or Shelby single pivot springer fork leg in a way where you could slide in a normal 9mm QR mtb disc hub into the dropouts and off you go. Nothing stops a bike better than disc brakes. Still waiting for a Rat to have it done correctly (front and rear) on this site. (maybe already done?) I think Luke is the closest to pulling it off.

Soon! It will work, the disc mounts behind the axle and moves back and forth with the wheel when adjusting. Great for a scratch build, but a lot of work to adapt it to an old frame...

I don't think it's stupid at all...just a wee bit ambitious. I probably would have tried it already, if only I'd had the wheels, disks, calipers, etc. readily available. As others have stated, this likely isn't a turn-key installation on a vintage frame...but with a little creative massaging...

The most aggravating thing might be spacing issues, since you're likely inserting another bracket and wider hub between the dropouts. Not insurmountable.

I'd like to hear from anyone that has used these. Whoever wrote the description is obviously not a English major, but it looks interesting....

There is a reason they always show stuff like that off the bike, every install is different.
Do you have the room on your bike to spread the dropouts a bit? Or is the axle long enough to allow the mount on the outside of the frame? Is there an adjustment for depth? If a guy isn't able fab some additional parts to make it work, it might be tricky... But, seems like they would work, I'd like to see an attachment like a coaster brake arm to keep it from spinning. I'm thinking there's a lot of torque on the caliper.

You forgot to add a little swearing to "I think it takes some fudging, grinding, fiddling , coddling and bending" when things don't quite work out smoothly as one would like it to!

As far as hubs go, I wanna buy this hub, yank that big DS spacer, and swap the axle for something shorter and solid. I bet you could get it under 120mm OLD once you take the big axle spacer out.... http://www.niagaracycle.com/categor...-sf-rear-disc-hub-7-speed-36h-135mm-qr-silver
As far as that adaptor goes, well.... i bet it works, but it's kludgy. As others said, you're going to need to fiddle, fab, cuss, and do your best Macgyver impersonation to get it work.... and even then, I'd expect it will need frequent tweaking, tuning, and re-tightening. Of course, I rather enjoy kludging things up, just to say i did it. Maybe i ought to try this before I knock it, but i'm not feeling very confident about it.

This is my next wish Mr. Genie.....I want to go full hydraulic discs front and back on a 30's frame with a three or two speed Sturmey in the back. I have just the frame & fork in mind I want to use, but it's a secret cause it may end up in a buildoff in order to scare the boots off the coronated ones. Someones got to do it! :wondering:
