A guy in my church has a "junk yard" it's just his collection of junk and he scraps steel, aluminum, and copper whenever he needs some money. I've gathered all the bikes on the property (maybe an acre) and put them all in one spot, there's only about 10 bikes. Only rusted and busted Walmart, Kmart, and Roses bikes, but it's good to have them there when I need parts.

Anyway, I was out this earlier this week looking for a fork and I noticed this old 16" BMX style Murray or Huffy bike, was chrome once upon a time, has a coaster rear wheel, but I was checking the single speed chain to see if it had any life in it and noticed that the chainring is a skiptooth! I know they only did this to save money, but I thought it was pretty funny. The chain is not skip, and I didn't think to look at the rear cog. I will definitely go and add this to my personal supply:

 sounds like something huffy would do, pretty cool though. it'd make a cool rat bike with the patina.

All the bikes at this place are only rat bikes. I brought back a mountain bike to hack up that day and when I looked at it yesterday, the nut on the steerer looks more like lava rock then a nut, nothing but rust, but the rest of the bike looks fine... eh?

Anyway, what I really like about this chainring is that unlike other 16" walmart bikes, as you can see this ring actually has the hole that lines up with the peg on the crank arm, most newer ones have a square shaped hole in the ring that lines up with a square shaft on the cranks, so to use it with a regular crankset you have to drill it out and add a hole.

that's a good chainring to have because it'll make a skip tooth rat bike easy to pedal. I always build my rats with kiddy chain rings.

Yeah, I need to start doing this, because my rats are just for cruising, plus the last rat bike race I had, out of 3 bikes, one didn't make it, but true to rattiness, we didn't stop and help him. haha Actually, we secured our first and second positions and then went back to help.

I have seen this on a lot of kids bikes. Some old multi-speed freewheels have the same thing too.

Pretty cool!

Yeah if you check out the older Schwinn road bikes. The rear freewheel gears have a skiptooth setup. Though they still used a normal chain. This was on a 73 Sport Tourer. Traded the frame but still have the crusty wheel.

hey i know that bike mine is pink and called the murray flyer on the chain gaurd i put a 26 mountain bike fork on it and gave it to my sister

It's not the same as vintage skip tooths. Just a regular 1/2" spacing without every other tooth. You'd think between 1/2" and 1" pitch would match up, but they don't. -Adam
