So I was tinkering with my Otasco the other night, and decided Im ready to repaint pieces of her.

When I got it, It was spray bombed over original red patina in Green and Black..

The wheel's/Spokes included are Green spray-bomb..

My First Question is, If I want them Cherry red, or close to.. should I remove the first layer of green paint, and start new on the chrome?
Or keep the green as a base coat?

My Second, is what is the best way to fake a MoonEyes Look? I've heard of Pizza Pans working and looking really good, but I havent got access to many tools at this point to reshape metal evenly to fit the contour of the rim. Ideas?

[I heard MOONEYES sold covers on their site, but are they for 24"? and can they be had used?]

Thanks all!

I thought drum set cymbals would be cool but holy smokes are they expensive!

there are some how to's on the web on making fiberglass covers. I think they stretch spandex over the wheel and then apply the resin. probably the least expensive way to make a set with no serious tools required. just wear a respirator!

There is a post in the How to section, on how to make youre own. these are 24"

O0ohh.. I'll get into that. thank you. Those are unique. I like how they go with the tone of the bike. Im looking to do Chrome [salt racer] if at all possible. ~::Wish me Luck::~

having trouble finding that section in the How-To. I keep coming across discussions about Mooneye Bikes, which is nice.. but doesnt offer a lot for me in the way of doing what you did here, with a custom job. Help Directing?

My Silver Maggot bike is silver. Even after 3 years when I go to spray another brand of silver for touch up on it the paint lifts. I don't mind this, after all it is a Maggot. If your base paint is well cured and sticking I would spray some red on it to see if it lifts. If it doesn't lift, go for it. If you are worried about red covering the green, then try a base coat of white over the green. Why make work, life is too short.
Thats a good point. The green seems to be on there pretty decent. It looks to me like someone who knew How to paint, rattlecanned it all, which is a shame, makes it harder to get off, like you say.. I think I will just try an overcoat..see what it looks like, trial and error.

Thanks again!

I've built model cars for years and have done some awesome painting as well. There are some rules for paint that some do not know. You can paint enamel over lacquer but not lacquer over enamel. Don't paint when humidity is over 60% and temperature is below 50 degrees. I have not worked with acrylics so I don't know how compatible those are with other paints. I have a Painting Guide that I wrote a few years ago on ebay. Look up my profile on ebay and there you will find the Guide: mlmtexas1

You might want to look into these then. You will have to measure diameter, but I do believe they will fit. At Home depot

They remind me of these

Or look into Water heater pans at home depot. The larger ones are flat and shiney:cool2:

Huh? My experience is just the opposite. When Lacquer is applied over enamel, the solvents will break down the enamel paint and cause cracking and lifting. We have actual done this on purpose in order to give a distressed vintage paint look before. Rarily is there any problem spraying enamel over lacquer.

You are correct sir. In my haste I got it reversed. I will edit my mistake.

Actually, you can. in the spray can form I do it to all my shiny bikes. The trick is to have Patience let the Enamel dry for like a week, then mist on the first coat of Lacquer. Let it dry a couple of days, then First full coat...Not too thick ...light..wait 2 more days the apply a nice coat, 2 days , another coat etc etc.

THe secret is Patience !!!

Nice paint! Is the enamel gloss or flat?

Yes. Gloss Rust-Oleum enamel. The lacquer is Rust-Oleum also. I like the gloss better in lacquer.
