I went back for Homecoming at the University of Idaho with my family and some friends. The weekend was fun and we fit in lots of activities including the parade. The Shriners from Couer d' Alene came down with their Octo-cycle. I can't find out much about it excepted that it was built in 1957. Looks like it uses motorcycle wheels.

So cool. :D

I wonder if it's hard to balance that many people on a bike at one time.

Balance might be tough especially with the cranks not being synchronized. I bet the fat tires make it easier.

Here's my theory (mind you, it's ridiculous), on the back of the white one there is a cylinder in front of the back wheel, the yellow one has the big 'box" at the rear. Great observation about the cranks not being in sync. I am thinking freewheel cranks attached to chain/chains that turn a generator to power up batteries for an electric motor, most of these items hidden in the rear "compartments." The front man pilots the bike and controls the throttle, he is trained. The rest of the men just follow simple rules to help him from losing it, any pedaling they do just boosts stored energy.

Told you it was far out.

I like your theory. But my guess is the gearing is so low for parade speeds, so syncing does not matter.

Good theory, but where is the intrigue in it?

You are right. I bet they use flux capacitors.

The Mr.Fusion hats have battery chargers with built-in teleporters working in-sync with another in the compartment to swap out batteries once they reach full charge. Makes sense to me.
