I got this old Giant Attraction in last week and I will be getting around to it soon, hopefully tomorrow. The pedals are a little stiff, wheels need to be trued, one of the shifters is busted, seat is a non-original Schwinn brand, and the handlebars need to be repainted. How old is this is? What is this worth? Is it worth it to fix? I guess what I am asking you, the jury of RatRodBikes, is this bike fit to fix and resell or does fate banish it to the boneyard?

If we have a majority vote for the boneyard, I'm probably keeping the deraileurs and definatly the seat (My Schwinn Ranger is in need of a third).

sorry to bombard you guys with what seems like stupid questions, but these bikes are really new territory for me.

How light is it supposed to be? This one has a steel frame, fork, stem, and handlebars. Though the wheels are an alloy of some kind. This bike still has the dealer sticker from our local bike shop.

Low-end MountainBike, Giant made and still makes sweet MTB's but not that one. You could fix it up but it is not collectable, someone needing transportation may want it.

I would say mid 90's and if in perfect condition I wouldnt pay more than 40$
 
If you are building it for profit you'll spend more than it's worth putting it back together.
If you are building it for something to ride go for it, could be a fun project.
 
If I found that thing, assuming i didn't know someone who could use it, I would:

-pull everything off of it that i like/need/might need
-donate the rest of the components to the co-op, if you have one nearby
-put the frame/fork/headset/seatpost in the basement or shed or whatever. Might make a fun project down the line.

There is very little value in that bike, but the frame (if straight) is too good to just scrap, imo.

Well, I removed the seat and it fits my Ranger nicely! I pulled the deraileurs as well as one of the grips. The rear deraileur cable was shot, it took just one slight tug to break it out of the shifter.

Anyway, I want the remains gone, as you probably have guessed so I'll be posting the remains in my thread in the "For Sale" section.
 
Apparently everyone with a brand name put out a version of this bike in that time frame.

They all have those center pull canti-lever brakes.

I have 3 of them right now:

A Diamond Back Accent that I completely rebuilt for myself a "keeper".

A Giant Boulder model in pretty nice shape that I have on CL for $90. I'm not getting covered up with calls, so it may have to go at a lower price.

And one branded Roland, which is in very nice shape. Light steel frame, rides and shifts really good. It will be on CL tomorrow for $125.00 to start.

There are always a few of them on the DFW CL, usually asking $100+.

If you took the time to fix everything wrong with that one, you'd probably spend more time on it than you could get back $$$-wise.

Just my personal observations, not based in any "fact" that I know of.

Well since it is already rusty you could break it down to it's pieces and throw the frame and fork on a big bonfire and give it that nice char-grilled look then make a clunker out of it....."Cremated Clunker" 8) Has a nice ring to it.
 
With out the touchy feally thing going on, by the pictures, mid 90's, New tires tubes $45, shifters $10, cables if need be another $7 at walmart, and 4-5 hours you have a $80 to a $100 bike there. You might have some effort to rebuild it but it a hobby and you might make $20 on it. Take it to your LBS and spend $250 on it. and I bet it's a 30lb bike.

You could always list it on Craigslist as "No gears to change" (Broken shifter) :lol:
 
With classes beginning again soon, a project must either have a good pay out or I must really want the bike for me to use up my time. I'd rather finish my Western Flyer Kodiak, which is where the deraileurs are headed as well as the grip. The grips on this Giant were a dead match to the ones on my Western Flyer, too bad only one was salvageable. But,I now have a complete set between the two.

Gotta admit, I like the Western Flyer's Titan frame better in terms of cool factor. I just got done buffing out most of it. The black paint is super glossy and the red swirls really pop out at you. I'll be getting a new headbadge custom made at the LBS tomorrow (if they are open, hope they are!)

I did want to swap the crank out of this too, but it wouldn't match up with my original chain ring, which I want to keep.

I saved a 1994 Huffy-built Free Spirit for my dad. He wanted something cheap, reliable, and simple to fix. Just needed a front inner tube and a cable. I'm doing a Western Flyer MTB right now.

I get bikes like that for free,and cut all the straight bars off for projects. Save any good parts, junk the rest. I put all my steel in a bin for the pickers, its always gone by trash day.
