I HAVE THIS OLD PEDAL FROM A ROADMASTER THAT NEEDS FIXING. A GOOD PEDAL SHOULD BE TIGHT , AND NOT ALL LOOSE AND GRINDY AND BENT. WHEN THEY GET SQUISHED INTO A NARROWER SHAPE , IT ELONGATES THE PEDAL, WHICH MAKES THE BEARINGS LOOSE . IF YOU GRAB YOUR PEDAL AND YANK IT TO AND FRO , IT SHOULDNT MOVE A WHOLE LOT. JUST TRY OUT A NEW PEDAL INCASE YOU FORGOT WHAT A GOOD ONE FEELS LIKE . THIS PEDAL IS VERY LOOSE , AND ALSO CAUSES IT TO GRIND AGAINST ITSELF . IT MAKES PEDDLING FEEL LIKE A DRAG . THESE NEED TO BE BENT BACK INTO SHAPE AND GREASED AND PUT BACK TOGETHER .

FIRST USE PLIERS TO UN BEND THE TABS TO DISASSEMBLE THE PEDAL . I DIDNT PHOTOGRAPH THIS STEP , BUT YOU CAN SEE THE SAME TABS IF YOU CONTINUE ON. IT DOES NOT TAKE MUSCLE TO UN BEND THEM , BUT YOU CAN IMAGINE THEY WILL BE DAMMAGED AND YOU MAY WORRY THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RE ASSEMBLE THEM , BUT I HAVE THE ANSWER FOR THAT . READ ON ..... NOW THAT IT IS APART , AND CLEANED , I BEGIN RESHAPING IT . YOU WILL SEE HOW WELL THIS WOOD JORGENSEN CLAMP WORKS FOR THIS !

THE CLAMP HELPS SPREAD THEM A BIT WIDER AND I CAN HAND SHAPE THE CURVE BACK INTO THE SHAPE. NEXT I USED A DREMEL CUT THE TABS JUST A LITTLE DEEPER
006.jpg
YOU CAN SEE THE TABS ARE MORE DISTINGUISHED NOW
009.jpg
PACK BOTH ENDS WITH GREASE (IT WILL SQUEEZE IN THERE THEN WIPE IT OFF
010.jpg
012.jpg
RE ASSEMBLE THE METAL PARTS AND RE BEND THE TABS
013.jpg
DONT TEAR THE TABS BY THINKING THIS TAKES MUSCLE . THEN I CLEANED UP THE TABS A BIT WITH A GRINDING WHEELE
017.jpg
YOU CAN SEE I TORE MY TABS JUST A BIT BUT IT IS STILL OK
018.jpg
NOW THE PLASTIC PARTS CAN BE REPAIRED , YOU CAN SEE THE CRACKS
019.jpg
I USE RUBBERIZED CA GLUE
020.jpg
THEN USE THE CA ADHESIVE ACCELERANT
023.jpg
THIS STUFF IS GREAT . HECK I EVEN USE MORE GLUE TO PUT IT BACK IN WITH THE METEL BACKER
026.jpg
NOW IT IS DONE . IT FEELS ALMOST AS TIGHT AS NEW , THE BEARINGS ARE AWESOMELY SMOOTH . THEY SPIN LIKE A WHIRLING DERVISH, IT LOOKS PRETTY , IT LOOKS WELL SHAPED , AND I AM HAPPY .

. HECK , IF I HAD TO TAKE THIS SAME PEDAL APART AND RE DO IT , THERE IS STILL ENOUGH METEL TO WORK WITH AND CUT IT AGAIN I BELIEVE . RON

Nice job. Usually pedals assembled like that are trashed instead of being repaired. Glad you show how to do it. Thanks. Gary

Always good to see old parts renovated as opposed to being discarded.

Nice job! 8)
