Thinking maybe getting a 3 speed hub for my Onyx Genesis. I would like opinions on which one is best and pros and cons of them please and thank you.

I have a Nexus 3i and a Sturmey archer 3i, I like them equally well. Although the nexus does shift better and is a bit easier to adjust.

I use and like my nexus but there aren't a lot of shifter options.

Gotta use a little imagination. Then the sky is the limit. I've used a non indexed Schwinn stem mounted shifter ( gotta know what angle 2nd is). And I am in the middle of modifying a Shimano grip shifter to a suicide shifter.

Here's the Shimano as it stands.

The mount I made

I will cut down the grip section to where the split clamp is, and put a plug on the end. Then drill/tap the split collar for a lever.

Key to using a different shifter is getting 2nd gear correct. Then having enough throw to get 1st and 3rd. The Shimano works fine, just set it the same as the stock shifter.

I like the Sturmey b/c you have freewheel, coaster, or drum options. And, typically, a smaller OLD, so you won't need to spread your frame as much to fit it. But, it seems like QC from Sturmey-Archer is a bit off nowadays. Some ppl get solid hubs; others have some nightmares. I built a wheel around an XRD3 for my wife, and there was something waaaaaay wrong with the guts. I ended up getting another one from the dealer, and swapping the guts between the shells. Bonus: I did get some decent spares out of the deal.

I've been using a Nexus 3 for a few months now. My first IGH ever and so far I like it. Had to get use to the ratchety/clickey noise it makes in the higher gears but it's not real loud or anything. Just different if you've never owned one before.

Ok. the nexus seems nice. What shifter does it come with? Ideally I want to run a suicide shifter.

I dont think the noise will really bug me. I doubt it will be in the high gear very often.

Thanks for the input.

i think you would need to change rim, i think those bikes have a 48 hole hub and rim

That's a great idea for the shifter.

I think I'm sold on the Nexus. But I have a question. To install it. Do you use the stocck spokes of the wheel and lace it up, or is different spokes required?
