What do they do? Do I need one for a S/A 3 speed stickshiter? Its the tall woodgrain type. Thanks, Mark

I think they were a safety feature. They have an internal spring that allows a litle slack in the cable when you snag some part of your anatomy on the shifter

Never seen an overload tube on a 3 speed s/a hub setup. If you look at 5 speed Stik Shift Schwinns, they had the big chrome overload tubes. 3 speed Schwinns with the shifter used an indicator spindle with a built in spring. Thumb shifters did not use a spring protection.

They are mostly a safety feature. But also, if you push the shifter too hard and there is not a spring, you can damage the cable or hub.

Lever advantage of the stick instead of a little lever can overpower cable ends and derailleur parts.
