So I've heard that you can not spray paint over powder coating. Is this true? I have a bike that I just had completely powder coated & I thought about spray painting part of the tank.

One time before it came up and someone said they sprayed their darts on top of powdercoating. I will look and see if I can find the thread. Maybe they roughed up the powdercoating ,which I'm sure is really hard to do. I did several parts and that stuff is tough. I have seen it scratch some.

Wash the powder coated surface to remove surface dirt and other contaminants. Use a soft cloth, water and mild detergent if necessary. Allow to dry completely, or dry with a chamois type cloth.

Step 2Sand the entire surface that is to be painted. This can be done by lightly dusting with a sandblast setup, or by hand. Use a fine grit sandpaper and rough up all surfaces. Do not sand through the powder coating. Take extra care in the corners and little nooks and crannies. Paint will not stick to the surface if there are any parts left un-sanded. This may not be evident right away, but the paint will peel more quickly when exposed to the elements if the surface is not properly and fully sanded.

I know of restorers powdercoating the base colors on frames and fenders then spray painting the contrasting colors and applying needed pinstriping...with a final sprayed clear coat. The key here is what Uncle Stretch noted...I have found that spray bombs seem to have a lot of hardner and dry faster than regular auto paint from a sprayer. The coats dry fast and don't have a chance to combine and adhere like regular paint. I am sure that if you follow the advice and do the proper prep job, you should get as good of result on the powdercoat as you would on a regular finish.

I have a couple of friends that have done it.
