Painting Rims?

Has anyone had any luck painting rims that were original chrome and have any advise they’d like to share? I have a project with pretty rough wheels and I was thinking about painting them. The chrome (if that’s what I t really was) has pretty much all flaked off.

Scuff them with Scotch Pads and prime them with self etching primer .

Then get plastic soda straws and make a cut on one side, lengthwise . Use them to cover the spokes . Cover the spoke nipple and end of straw with masking tape.
