what is the idea behind the plastic platform pedals out there? looking at pedals I see tons of the plastic platforms.

Plastic is cheap and lightweight, but in my experience, plastic pedals die an early death. There are "nicer" plastic pedals out there, and i don't have a lot of experience with those, but very cheap plastic pedals aren't even worth mounting on a bike, even if you got'm for free. Super common bike shop scenario is where a rider (usually a high school kid) comes in holding what remains of the platform, and tells us he rode to the shop on the spindle after the thing broke. It can happen with steel/mag/aluminum pedals too, but the metal pedals last a lot longer.

Glad that you brought that up Buyer Beware ! I recently bought replacement classic 1/2" ( OPC ) block pedals . Chrome frame and black blocks . Looked like the real deal. But the blocks are plastic ! Nowhere in the ad did it say that. The plastic platform pedals are sometimes marketed for barefoot riding.

What's really great about those factory supplied plastic platforms, is when that high school kid comes in with the pedals from the bike he bought last weekend. Fat bikes are great for busting pedals.
