The San Francisco Bay Area seems to be ground zero for L.J.B.D.S

La Jolla Bicycle Derangement Syndrome

Symptoms: Taking a used Walmart house brand bicycle that retails for $100 new, and adding a unexplainable markup, such as: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/bik/2600068857.html

Attempts to combat this syndrome will be met with any of the following:

ANGER: "Frack You! Mind your own business!"
DENIAL: "No, I paid much more than that for this bike. That one at the store is different."
CONFUSION: "No, this bike was purchased at a excellent bike shop in La Jolla, California."
BARGAINING: "Oh, okay... how about $110, since the one at Walmart has sales tax on it?"

Please do what you can to fight this terrible affliction in your community.

call em and say "I'd like to buy your $45 dollar cruiser!" and when they say "its $145" you get all "WHOA!!! did it belong to Ice-T or snoop dog or sumthin?" ..."and they say.."uh-no, just me.."
and then you ask "SO! your really famous?" they say, "NO"... then U ask if its got a motor or somethin? or maybe some sweet baskets?" finally they resort to telling you "It's just a regular bike!" and then you go back to.. SO... its $45 right?? sometimes they even wanna go around again!!

I actually like these La Jolla bikes (at a low price) for lightweight beater bikes. If there was one nearby for $30 (in funcitonal condition) I would get it. I've taken a couple to Burning Man over the years and they do an adequate job.

I'd get it for the wheels and a few other parts, but I can't weld aluminum, so I stick with steel frame bikes. It makes more of the bike useful to me.

It has aluminum rims so I might grab it. I just sold some parts, so I have at least $30 in my pocket, but still, useless aluminum frame. Might sell it to scrap and get a few bucks. I don't remember if the handlebars looked useful or not

I was browsing the South Jersey Craig's list last week and noticed this ad for "an original condition Schwin Bicycle from the late 50's early 60's"for a mere $1000...

Apparently the owner added reflecters on the pedals and a fresh warning sticker when he restored it...

::)
Then today I noticed this "Custom California Cruiser" going for $350...

Which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Genesis Onyx sold at Walmart for $150...

Anything for a buck, I guess...

Sorry that I didn't get pics but the Salvation Army needs help too because they have some old bikes worth $10-$20 the condition they are now but they want around $65 bucks for them, an orange ladies Huffy Olympia, 93 ladies Murray 10 or 12 speed and I few others I can't remember now.
